For some people, fitness is like religion and politics: “my way is right, and you shall burn in hell forever for disagreeing with me.”
Everyone believes that they are “right.”
Yet, is there really a clear right and wrong way to do the whole fitness thing? Is there a wrong way to live your own life?
No, there is no wrong way to live your life – go and be free, I say – but recognize that there are consequences.
And yes, I think you CAN do fitness COMPLETELY WRONG.
People choose the “wrong” fitness all the time–because they do not have a good understanding of the cost and benefits. The understanding of benefits is hyper-inflated by clever marketing. “You’ll burn 7 trillion calories per hour!” The risks are not understood due to a basic lack of exercise knowledge…“Yeah it’s supposed to hurt a little.”
Seriously I have heard a trainer say exactly that to a client, “it’s SUPPOSED to HURT a little.” That level of idiocy has no place in exercise.
Remember the purpose of exercise is to IMPROVE some attribute. That could be to drop bodyfat, build muscle, enhance strength, increase flexibility, or any other desired result.
When you throw in to the equation the fact that many people FORCE themselves to do exercise that they DO NOT ENJOY, with a HIGH RISK of INJURY, that does not achieve the desired result– I simply call that WRONG.
